  10.              INTRODUCTION
  11.  
  12.              ShowLogo is a screen saver for your PC.  Once installed, it
  13.              monitors your keyboard, mouse and parallel ports, looking
  14.              for activity.  If there is no activity after a user-
  15.              definable period ShowLogo saves whatever is on the screen
  16.              currently and displays a logo or some other image.  ShowLogo
  17.              can also be activated by pressing specific combinations of
  18.              keys (known as hotkeys).  Depending on the hotkey selected,
  19.              the program can display a multi-line message, lock your
  20.              computer, go to sleep, wake up or display your logo.
  21.              Numerous command-line options allow precise control.
  22.  
  23.              ShowLogo supports 25, 43 and 50 line color displays as well
  24.              as the standard EGA and VGA color graphics modes.
  25.  
  26.              ShowLogo occupies only 6.8K of RAM once installed.  The rest
  27.              of the program is swapped to either expanded memory or the
  28.              hard disk.

  31.              SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  32.  
  33.              ShowLogo requires a hard disk and a COLOR VGA video system.
  34.              Expanded memory is recommended but not required.  380K of
  35.              free RAM is required during installation and removal of the
  36.              program, as well as 850K of disk space or expanded memory.
  37.              The program works with DOS versions 3.0 through 5.0 and is
  38.              compatible with Microsoft and Logitech mice.

  41.              INSTALLATION

  43.              To install ShowLogo log onto the drive containing the
  44.              ShowLogo disk and type INSTALL.

  47.              ADDING SHOWLOGO TO YOUR AUTOEXEC.BAT FILE
  48.  
  49.              If you want ShowLogo to be loaded automatically every time
  50.              you power up the computer you need to add it to your
  51.              AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  The program should be loaded after any
  52.              network drivers or communications programs (see COMMAND-LINE
  53.              OPTIONS) but before any DOS shell or menu programs.  For
  54.              example, assume you have installed the program in the
  55.              C:\LOGO directory.  You would add the following line to your
  56.              AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

  73.              The next time you reboot or power up the system, ShowLogo
  74.              will automatically be loaded.

  77.              RUNNING SHOWLOGO
  78.  
  79.              Running ShowLogo is easy even if you haven't added it to
  80.              your AUTOEXEC.BAT file.  For example, if you had installed
  81.              the program in the C:\LOGO directory, you would type
  82.              C:\LOGO\SHOWLOGO to run the program (see Command Line
  83.              switches below for details on how to set various options
  84.              when you start the program).  When you run the program it
  85.              will display some information on the screen and return you
  86.              to the DOS prompt.

  88.              ShowLogo will pop up after the number of minutes you
  89.              specified (the default is 2 minutes).  You can pop up the
  90.              program at any time from within most any text or graphics
  91.              mode program by typing Alt-LeftShift-A <ALT><LShft><A>.
  92.              This means to hold down either ALT key and the left SHIFT
  93.              key while typing an A.  This will cause ShowLogo to display
  94.              your logo immediately.

  96.              To lock the system use the Alt-LeftShift-L <ALT><LShft><L>
  97.              hotkey.  You will then be asked to enter and confirm a
  98.              password.  Once the password is confirmed the "system
  99.              locked" message will appear and the system will be locked
  100.              until you reenter the password or shut off the computer.

  102.              To display a message use the Alt-LeftShift-M <ALT><LShft><M>
  103.              hotkey.  You can enter five lines of 35 characters.  When
  104.              you have finished typing your message just keep pressing
  105.              ENTER until all five lines have been entered.  The message
  106.              will remain on the screen until you press a key or move the
  107.              mouse.

  109.              To put the program to sleep, use the Alt-LeftShift-S
  110.              <ALT><LShft><S> hotkey (You can also put ShowLogo to sleep
  111.              using a command line option).  This will prevent ShowLogo
  112.              from popping up until it is awakened.  You can still pop up
  113.              ShowLogo manually.

  115.              To wake the program use the Alt-LeftShift-W <ALT><LShft><W>
  116.              hotkey (You can also wake ShowLogo using a command line
  117.              option).  Waking the program allows it to pop up after no
  118.              activity.

  120.              Allow the program several seconds after you deactivate it
  121.              before trying to activate it again.  The swapping process
  122.              takes a few seconds to complete and the program will ignore
  123.              the hotkeys until it is done.

  139.              COMMAND LINE OPTIONS
  140.  
  141.              ShowLogo can accept various commands when it is run from the
  142.              DOS prompt.  The following list details the command line
  143.              options understood by the program.  The commands are entered
  144.              like this: SHOWLOGO /4 /N LOGONAME.PCX.  This set of options
  145.              tells ShowLogo to pop up after 4 minutes of inactivity and
  146.              to use the logo named LOGONAME.PCX.
  147.  
  148.              The command line options are:
  149.  
  150.              /1..9          Set a delay time of 1 to 9 minutes.  The
  151.                             program will pop up after this number of
  152.                             minutes with no keyboard, mouse or parallel
  153.                             port activity.
  154.  
  155.              /D             Force disk swapping.  Allows you to prevent
  156.                             the program from using expanded memory.  You
  157.                             would only want to choose this option if you
  158.                             need to reserve the expanded memory for
  159.                             another application.

  161.              /G             Go to sleep.  Allows the user to prevent
  162.                             ShowLogo from popping up automatically.  This
  163.                             is useful to prevent the interruption of
  164.                             activities that use the serial port (like
  165.                             downloading files via modem).  Also useful if
  166.                             ShowLogo causes problems when popping up over
  167.                             a particular program.

  169.              /H hexkey      Specify the TSR hot key in hex.  ShowLogo is
  170.                             what is known as a Terminate-and-Stay-
  171.                             Resident (TSR) program.  That is why it can
  172.                             pop up even though you are running another
  173.                             program.  It is possible that one of the
  174.                             programs you use may itself use <ALT><LShft>
  175.                             <A>.  If that is the case you will want to
  176.                             change the hot key which activates ShowLogo.
  177.                             This option allows you to do so.  Two
  178.                             alternative hot keys are: <ALT><LeftShift>
  179.                             <Z> (enter A2C as the hexkey) and <ALT><TAB>
  180.                             (enter 80F as the hexkey).

  182.              /M             Squelch swapping messages.  ShowLogo displays
  183.                             a message when swapping itself to and from
  184.                             the hard disk.  If you don't want the message
  185.                             displayed, select this option.

  187.              /N name        Enter the name of the logo file you want to
  188.                             display.  If this option is not used, the
  189.                             program will display the file called
  190.                             LOGO.PCX.  The logo file must be located in
  191.                             the same directory as the file SHOWLOGO.EXE.

  205.              /S path        Specify the drive and directory for swap
  206.                             files.  When swapping itself to the disk,
  207.                             ShowLogo puts it's swap files in the C:\
  208.                             directory.  If you want them stored somewhere
  209.                             else enter the drive and directory to use.

  211.              /U             Unload ShowLogo from memory.  This will not
  212.                             be possible if another TSR program has been
  213.                             loaded after ShowLogo.  A message will be
  214.                             displayed on the screen telling whether or
  215.                             not the program was successfully unloaded.
  216.  
  217.              /W             Wake up.  Reactivates ShowLogo's automatic
  218.                             pop up code.  Use this command when the
  219.                             program is asleep and you are ready for it to
  220.                             resume it's automatic function.
  221.  
  222.              /?             Show these command line options.  This
  223.                             command does not install ShowLogo in memory,
  224.                             it merely displays the options.

  227.              GENERATING YOUR OWN LOGO FILE
  228.  
  229.              ShowLogo works with images stored using the popular PCX
  230.              format.  PCX images can be created using PC Paintbrush or
  231.              other paint programs that support the format.  The program
  232.              expects a logo to be created in 640x350 16-color mode.
  233.              Logos that are created in this mode but that are smaller
  234.              than 640x350 will move about the screen randomly to reduce
  235.              the chance of burning-in the monitor.  The logo file must be
  236.              stored in the same directory as the file SHOWLOGO.EXE.

  239.              GETTING YOUR LOGO SCANNED BY DESERT FROG SOFTWARE
  240.  
  241.              Desert Frog Software provides a high quality scanning
  242.              service in support of this product.  For a $20 fee Desert
  243.              Frog will scan and convert a photograph of your logo into a
  244.              format usable by ShowLogo.  The scanned image can be
  245.              replicated and freely used for any purpose and on any number
  246.              of PCs.

  248.              When submitting a logo for scanning, limit the size of the
  249.              source image to 8.5 by 11 inches or less.  Specify whether
  250.              you want a full-screen logo which does not move, or a
  251.              smaller logo which will move around the screen randomly to
  252.              reduce the chance of burning-in the phosphors on your
  253.              monitor.

  271.              CONFLICTS WITH OTHER PROGRAMS
  272.  
  273.              ShowLogo is a Terminate and Stay Resident (TSR) program.
  274.              MS-DOS was not designed to support TSRs, so there is always
  275.              a chance pf conflicts between the resident program and the
  276.              normal application running at the time.  Try the suggestions
  277.              listed here if you have a conflict between ShowLogo and
  278.              another program.
  279.  
  280.              Problem #1: Program X uses the same hotkey as ShowLogo.
  281.  
  282.              Solution: Use the /H command line option to set a different
  283.              primary hotkey for ShowLogo.
  284.  
  285.              Problem #2: My mouse behaves funny when I run program X with
  286.              ShowLogo installed.
  287.  
  288.              Solution: Put ShowLogo to sleep when running this program.
  289.              You can either do it manually using the <ALT><LSHFT><S>
  290.              hotkey or by using the /G command line option.  A better
  291.              solution if you use program X a lot is to create a batch
  292.              file to run program X.  The first command in the batch file
  293.              would be: SHOWLOGO /G (preceeded by the appropriate path).
  294.              The next command would be the command necessary to activate
  295.              program X.  The last command in the batch file would be:
  296.              SHOWLOGO /W (again preceeded by the appropriate path).  This
  297.              would wake ShowLogo so that it could resume it's normal
  298.              functions.

  300.              Problem #3: ShowLogo pops up when I'm doing very long
  301.              recalculations with my spreadsheet.
  302.  
  303.              Solution: Put ShowLogo to sleep using one of the methods
  304.              listed in the solution to problem #2.
  305.  
  306.              Problem #4: ShowLogo pops up when I'm downloading files from
  307.              a bulletin board and I lose the file and my connection.
  308.  
  309.              Solution: Same as for problems #2 and #3.
  310.  
  311.              Problem: Program X runs a lot slower than it used to.
  312.  
  313.              Solution: Program X was probably using Expanded memory for
  314.              data or overlay storage and now ShowLogo is using that
  315.              memory.  Run ShowLogo with the /D command line option to
  316.              force it to use disk space for storing it's swap files
  317.              instead of using the expanded memory.
